Bellave Shivaram is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Virginia. As an experimental condensed matter physicist, his work focuses on strongly correlated electron systems, particularly metamagnetism, quantum spin liquids, and unconventional superconductivity under extreme conditions like high magnetic fields and low temperatures. He has pioneered MEMS-based magnetometry techniques and contributed to hydrogen storage research with world-record organo-metallic complexes.
- Education:
- Ph.D., Northwestern University (1984)
Research Highlights include:
- Mapping 3D pressure-temperature-magnetic field phase diagrams of UPt3.
- Discovering universal nonlinear magnetic response in metamagnets.
- Investigating quantum spin liquids in Kitaev magnets like α-RuCl3.
- Developing machine learning tools for labyrinthine magnetic pattern analysis.
- Establishing hydrogen absorption records in custom-synthesized materials.
Scientific Awards:
- Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Fellow (1988)
- 3 Cavaliers Awards (2024, University of Virginia grant recognition)
His work bridges experimental innovation and theoretical insight, with collaborations spanning APS outreach leadership and multidisciplinary teams. Recent projects emphasize high-field magnetism (up to 30 Tesla) and quantum critical phenomena in heavy electron metals.
