Brad Ramshaw is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at Cornell University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on experimental condensed matter physics, particularly probing quantum materials under extreme conditions like high magnetic fields (up to 100 Tesla). He specializes in developing advanced ultrasonic and transport measurement techniques to study phenomena such as superconductivity, quantum criticality, and symmetry-breaking phases.
- Education: BSc (2002-2007) and PhD (2007-2012) in Physics from the University of British Columbia.
His work explores unconventional superconductors, topological semimetals, and quantum spin liquids, aiming to uncover fundamental electron interactions that could enable room-temperature superconductivity. He has led research projects using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) to identify hidden symmetries and phase transitions in materials like TaAs, Sr2RuO4, and CeIrIn5.
Recent publications highlight studies on Planckian dissipation, Fermi-surface reconstruction in cuprates, and thermodynamic signatures of Weyl fermions. His lab’s advancements in high-speed electronics and micro/nanofabrication allow measurements in extreme regimes, including ultrasonic analysis of quantum spin liquids.
- Scientific Awards: Lee Osheroff Richardson Science Prize (2017), Sloan Fellow, CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar, NSF Early-Career Award, DOE Early Career Grant.
Brad advises graduate students Avi Shragai, Sahal Shailesh Kamat, and Yifei Liu. His lab maintains a 20 Tesla DC magnet and 35 Tesla pulsed system, leveraging global user facilities for 100 Tesla experiments.
