Professor Helen Beebee holds the Samuel Hall Professorship of Philosophy at the University of Manchester (current position) and concurrently serves as Professor of Philosophy of Science at the University of Leeds (since 2022). She is also an Honorary Professor at the University of Sydney (2010–present) and has held prominent roles including Head of the Philosophy Department at the University of Birmingham (2005–2008) and Head of the School of Philosophy, Theology & Religion at the University of Birmingham (2011–2012). Her research focuses on metaphysics, philosophy of science, Humean philosophy, and addressing gender disparities in philosophy.
Education: PhD in Philosophy (King's College London), MA in Philosophy (University of Liverpool), BA in Philosophy (University of Warwick).
Her research interests include the nature of causation, laws of nature, compatibilism regarding free will, and David Lewis's philosophical legacy. She has led major grants, including an £800,000 AHRC project on David Lewis's influence (2016–2019) and co-led the AHRC-funded 'Metaphysics of Science' project (2006–2009).
Editorial roles include Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Philosophical Association (since 2013) and Co-editor of Philosophy and Phenomenological Research (2013–2017). She has delivered prestigious lectures such as the Mangolesti Lectures (2015) and Sainsbury Lecture (2011), and contributed to BBC Radio programs like In Our Time and The Philosophers’ Arms.
