Helen Beebee

Professor Helen Beebee holds the position of Professor of Philosophy of Science at the University of Leeds, School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science. She has previously held roles at multiple institutions including Manchester, Birmingham, and King's College London. Her academic contributions include editorial leadership for journals like the Journal of the American Philosophical Association and Philosophy and Phenomenological Research, as well as the BSPS Open initiative. She has served as President of the Aristotelian Society (2017–18) and the British Society for the Philosophy of Science (2015–17), and as Director of the British Philosophical Association (2007–2011). Her educational background includes a BA from Warwick, MA from Liverpool, and PhD from King's College London.

Her research focuses on Humeanism (denying natural necessity) and the underrepresentation of women in philosophy. Key areas include causation, laws of nature, and free will, with recent work addressing implicit bias and stereotype threat in academia. She has also contributed to debates on metaphysical revolutions, particularly regarding David Lewis's influence.

Beebee’s media engagements include radio interviews on free will, Hume, and causal theories. Her grants and projects include the AHRC-funded study on David Lewis (2016–2019), resulting in Philosophical Letters of D.K. Lewis, and a Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship (2008–2010). She currently supervises postgraduate students in metaphysics, history of philosophy, and philosophical methodology. Her efforts in diversity initiatives include co-chairing the Good Practice Scheme (2013) and co-editing the Women in Philosophy reports (2011, 2021).
