Jan Cover is a Professor of Philosophy at Purdue University specializing in Early Modern Philosophy, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Science, and Philosophy of Religion.
Education:
- B.S. in Biochemistry and Biophysics, University of California Davis
- B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Philosophy, Syracuse University
His research spans Leibniz, Spinoza, causation, space-time, and modality with current projects on Leibniz's Discourse on Metaphysics and portraiture theory. He explores fundamental questions about physical objects, compatibilism, and pictorial depiction de re, including whether a single portrait can represent multiple subjects or serve as a self-portrait.
Cover has co-edited Central Themes in Early Modern Philosophy (Hackett) and Leibniz: Nature and Freedom (Oxford), and co-authored Theories of Knowledge and Reality (McGraw-Hill), Philosophy of Science: Central Issues (Norton), and Leibniz on Substance and Individuation (Cambridge).
