Becky Thompson is a Professor and Undergraduate Program Director in the Department of Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Simmons University. She holds appointments at multiple institutions globally and is renowned for her interdisciplinary work spanning sociology, poetry, and activism. Her research focuses on refugee resilience, trauma-informed pedagogy, and intersections of identity in social justice.
Education: BA in Sociology (UC Santa Cruz), MA/PhD in Sociology (Brandeis), Postdoctoral work in African American Studies (Princeton as Rockefeller Fellow), MFA in Creative Writing (Stonecoast, 2021), and advanced yoga training (RYT-500).
Her poetry collection To Speak in Salt (2021) explores refugee experiences, while Teaching with Tenderness reimagines pedagogy through embodiment and tenderness. Awards include the Ex Ophidia Poetry Prize and Gustavus Myers Award.
Thompson teaches courses like ‘Whiteness, Antiracism, and Social Justice’ and ‘Birth and Death: The Sociology of Joy and Suffering,’ emphasizing reflexive, student-centered learning. She advises doctoral students on topics ranging from Indigenous yoga practices to transgender healthcare.
Labs/Teams: Active in yoga healing initiatives in Greece, Thailand, and China, co-founded Making Mirrors with Jehan Bseiso to amplify refugee voices.
