Prof. Beatriz Prieto-Simón is a Group Leader at the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ) and an ICREA Research Professor, with over 20 years of experience in biosensors, nanotechnology, and electrochemistry. Her research group develops advanced nanostructured materials for innovative diagnostic solutions in clinical and environmental contexts. She previously led research teams in Australia at the University of South Australia and Monash University before joining ICIQ.
Research Interests:
- Electrochemical biosensors for clinical and environmental applications
- Nanofabrication of porous silicon and alumina nanostructures
- Surface chemistry and biointerface engineering
- Point-of-care diagnostics for antimicrobial resistance (AMR)
- Non-invasive monitoring via microneedle and wearable sensors
- Exosome and pathogen detection for precision medicine
Recent Publication Trends: Her recent work focuses on developing ultrasensitive, label-free biosensing platforms using nanostructured materials. Key themes include DNA detection using nanopore arrays, wireless and battery-less sensors for environmental and veterinary use, transdermal glucose monitoring, and dual-mode exosome detection. These efforts reflect a strong translational focus on real-world diagnostic challenges, particularly in AMR and personalized healthcare.
Scientific Awards:
- ICREA Research Professor
- Ramon y Cajal Fellowship
Advising and Grants: Prof. Prieto-Simón actively mentors PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, including Fearghal O'Connor, Lucia Morillo Victorero, and Akash Bachhuka. She leads several competitive research projects such as DIAG4AMR and NanoCarbaOne, funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and the European Horizon Europe program, demonstrating strong grant acquisition and project leadership capabilities.
Research Group and Lab: Her team at ICIQ is multidisciplinary, combining expertise in materials science, electrochemistry, and bioengineering to create intelligent diagnostic platforms inspired by natural systems. The group emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and the translation of scientific discoveries into practical technologies for global health challenges.
