Dr Beacon Mbiba is a Senior Lecturer in Urban Planning and International Development at Oxford Brookes University's School of the Built Environment. Previously, he held roles at the London School of Economics, University of Zimbabwe, and several other institutions. His research focuses on urban transformations, infrastructure development, diaspora policies, and poverty alleviation in Africa and the Global South.
Education: BSc (Hons), MSc, PhD (urban-related disciplines), PgDipDPT, Cert GIS, MRTPI (Royal Town Planning Institute membership), FHEA (Fellow of the Higher Education Academy), and MZIRUP.
Research interests include urban governance, land policy, migration's role in development, and sustainable urbanization. He coordinates Peri-NET (Africa's Urban and Peri-Urban Research Network) and advises on global urban policies for UN-HABITAT and African Development Bank. His articles explore topics like renewable energy transitions in low-income housing, diaspora remittances during crises, and post-colonial urban security dynamics.
He has supervised PhD students in Nigeria, Ghana, Egypt, and Mozambique, contributing to research on human security, energy access, and urban planning. Mbiba also serves on editorial and governance boards for journals and NGOs, including the Canon Collins Trust and Hyde Housing Association.
