Bas Arts is a Professor at the Forest and Nature Conservation Policy (FNP) group of Wageningen University, the Netherlands, where he holds a Personal Chair in Forest Governance. His expertise spans international forest governance, biodiversity conservation, climate change policy, environmental governance, and sustainable development.
- Education: Master in Biology (Forest Ecology, Environmental Sciences, 1987); PhD in Policy Sciences and Public Administration (1998)
- Research: Focuses on the local-global nexus of forest and nature governance, multi-level governance, and interdisciplinary collaboration with natural/social scientists
- Grants: Acquired over 25 research grants from NWO, EU Framework, and Horizon 2020
- Teaching: Designed and taught 20+ courses at all academic levels
Arts served as Chair of FNP (2006–2018) and held visiting professorships at Europe College (Belgium), BOKU University (Austria), Cambridge University (UK), and the University of Michigan (USA). He also held a Visiting Fellowship at the Max Planck Institute (Germany). In 2018, he stepped down as Chair but remains active in research and teaching. His recent book, Forest Governance: Hydra or Chloris (2021), synthesizes his work in the field.
