Bart van der Sloot is an Associate Professor at Tilburg Law School and the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society (TILT) at Tilburg University. His research focuses on privacy, big data governance, internet regulation, and the legal implications of AI technologies. He holds editorial roles, including Editor-in-Chief of the European Data Protection Law Review, and has contributed to major studies like the WRR Big Data Study and WODC research on procedural law for the 21st century.
He has received prestigious awards, including the KNAW Early Career Award (2023), NWO Top Talent Grant, and NWO Veni Grant. His work bridges legal theory and practice, addressing challenges such as GDPR implementation, cross-border data flows, and ethical AI. He has authored or co-authored over 280 publications, including books on data boundaries, generative AI regulation, and socio-technical change.
Van der Sloot leads projects like the Digital Legal Studies initiative (2019–2025) and has collaborated internationally on topics like AI ethics, facial recognition risks, and anti-doping data protection. His media engagements include expert commentary on AI-generated deepfakes and societal impacts of emerging technologies.
