Dr Barry Ryan is a Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Keele University's School of Social Sciences. He serves as PGT Programme Lead for Politics/International Relations pathways and Research Cluster Lead (Centre for Global Studies). His roles include academic leadership and contributing to global security research.
Before joining Keele in 2009, he lectured at the University of Limerick, Dublin City University, and Lancaster University. His research focuses on policing, global security, maritime security, and critical security studies. Notable work includes exploring the Balkans' police reform, maritime spatial strategies, and the theoretical implications of sea politics.
His research has been recognized with the British International Studies Association Best Article 2013 award for his work on global policing power. He actively contributes to editorial boards of journals like Capital and Class and Journal of the Indian Ocean Region.
Ryan has extensive field experience, including working with the OSCE, UNDP, and Irish Aid on security reforms in the Balkans, Eastern Europe, and the Caucasus. His teaching covers International Relations theory, security studies, and global politics.
He supervises PhD students in global security and critical theory. His recent publications include the Routledge Handbook of Maritime Security and articles on maritime security frameworks, cyber warfare, and spatial strategies.
