Dr. Barbara Lopes-Cardozo is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Emory University, affiliated with the Hubert Department of Global Health (Rollins School of Public Health) and the School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She holds an MD from the University of Amsterdam, an MPH from Tulane University, and a psychiatry specialization from Louisiana State University.
Her career spans 17 years at the CDC’s Emergency Response and Recovery Branch, where she pioneered mental health programs in humanitarian emergencies. She is a founding member of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) – Holland, participating in missions across Armenia, Colombia, Peru, Somalia, Uganda, Haiti, and Nicaragua. At Emory, she teaches public health and mental health in emergencies, while also providing clinical psychiatric care at Grady Hospital’s International Medical Center.
Dr. Lopes-Cardozo’s research focuses on mental health outcomes in war-affected regions (e.g., Afghanistan, Kosovo, Cambodia) and the psychological resilience of aid workers. She supervises psychiatry residents at Clarkston Community Health Center and collaborates with institutions like the University of Washington and the Royal Tropical Institute.
