Prof. Barbara Göbel serves as Director of the Ibero-American Institute (IAI) in Berlin since 2005 and Honorary Professor at the Free University of Berlin's Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology since 2017. She leads the German Latin American Studies Association (ADLAF) and coordinates the Mecila research consortium focusing on Latin American conviviality and inequality. Her interdisciplinary work bridges socio-ecological studies, digital transformation of cultural institutions, and knowledge infrastructures.
Research focuses include socio-ecological inequalities, geopolitics of knowledge, and the anthropology of nature. She has held visiting professorships in Argentina, Chile, Peru, and the U.S., and serves on boards of national/international organizations like the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (SPK). Notable awards include Argentina's Premio Leloir and Dartmouth College's German Harris Distinguished Visiting Professorship.
Recent projects include the Mecila initiative (2020–2026), digital transformation studies in cultural institutions, and transnational knowledge infrastructure research. Her publications address cultural heritage contestations, Humboldtian science legacies, and Latin America's socio-ecological dynamics.
