Fernando Nina is a Substitute Professor of Romance Literatures at the University of Heidelberg since 2021, holding a W2 position at the Chair of Romance Literatures. He previously served as Assistant Professor of Latin American Literature and Culture at the University of Utrecht (2006-2009) and held substitute professorships in Mainz and Mannheim. His academic journey includes a Magister Artium from LMU Munich (2005) and a PhD in Romance Philology (2009), followed by a Habilitation in Romance Literary and Cultural Studies in 2020 with his thesis on 18th-century Latin American intellectual thought.
His research focuses on decolonial theory, critical race studies, and colonial Latin American literature. Key areas include the interplay between literature and cultural philosophy, with special attention to South-South literary correlations and the works of authors like Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, José María Arguedas, and Pablo Palacio. Current projects include a senior fellowship at the Maria Sibylla Merian Center in Sao Paulo (2024), exploring conviviality and inequality in Latin America.
Nina has lectured at institutions across Europe and Latin America, including guest professorships in Granada, Quito, and Porto Alegre. As program coordinator for the Ibero-American Studies master's program at Heidelberg, he emphasizes theoretical and methodological rigor in cultural analysis. His publications span monographs, edited volumes, and critical studies on topics ranging from Early Modern Hispanic satire to decolonial feminism.
