Barbara Emily Bierer is a Professor of Medicine (Pediatrics) at Harvard Medical School and a hematologist/oncologist at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She serves as a Member of the HMS Center for Bioethics and holds leadership roles in multiple research initiatives including the Regulatory Foundations, Law and Ethics Program of Harvard Catalyst and SMART IRB.
Dr. Bierer earned her MD from Harvard Medical School. Her research focuses on bioethics and regulatory science for clinical research, with emphasis on:
- Ethical frameworks for multi-national clinical trials
- Regulatory harmonization across borders
- Clinical trial data sharing infrastructure
- Collaborative research platforms
- Research integrity systems
- Faculty development in academic medicine
She has received the following scientific award:
- HMS Harold Amos Faculty Diversity Award for establishing the Center for Faculty Development and Diversity at Brigham and Women's Hospital
Dr. Bierer co-founded and leads the Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center (MRCT Center), launched the non-profit Vivli global data sharing platform, and established the COVID-19 Collaboration Platform. Previously (2003-2014), she served as Senior Vice President for Research at Brigham and Women's Hospital, where she initiated the Brigham Research Institute and Innovation Hub (iHub), and served as institutional official for human subjects research, animal research, biosafety, and research integrity.
