Bård Kuvaas is a Professor in the Department of Leadership and Organizational Behaviour at BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo. He currently serves as Associate Dean for the Doctoral Program at BI and is responsible for the Leadership and Organization program. Kuvaas has been appointed as the Norwegian Ambassador of the HR Division and served on the Executive Committee for the HR Division at the Academy of Management starting August 2017.
His research spans three primary domains: Human Resource Management (focusing on pay systems, performance appraisal, training, and HR-systems), Organizational Behavior (examining motivation, social exchange, and performance), and Behavioral Decision Making (investigating framing effects and mood influences). Kuvaas has developed a particular expertise in understanding how intrinsic motivation interacts with organizational practices and reward systems, challenging conventional wisdom about performance-based pay.
His recent publications reveal a sophisticated approach to understanding workplace dynamics through multiple theoretical lenses, particularly Self-Determination Theory and Social Exchange Theory. Kuvaas has increasingly incorporated methodological innovations like Necessary Condition Analysis to test theoretical propositions more rigorously. His work demonstrates how contextual factors moderate the relationships between HR practices and employee outcomes, revealing complex nonlinear effects and boundary conditions.
- BI Norwegian Business School research award for outstanding research (2016)
Kuvaas teaches across multiple programs including doctoral courses, executive education in Norway and Shanghai/China, and Master of Science programs. He serves on the review boards of Journal of Organizational Behavior, European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, and Human Resource Management Review. His research collaborations extend to numerous Norwegian organizations, and he is frequently invited to speak to practitioners on HRM issues. His work bridges academic rigor with practical relevance, making significant contributions to both theoretical understanding and organizational practice.
