Linda Lai is a Professor in the Department of Management and Organization at BI Norwegian Business School, where she has built an extensive academic career since 1987. Her professional journey began as a PhD candidate at BI, progressed to Associate Professor from 1992-2011, and she achieved full Professor status in 2010, which she maintains to the present day. She also holds a PhD (Dr. Oecon) from the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) completed in 1991 and a Master of Science in Business from BI Norwegian Business School from 1986.
Professor Lai's research expertise spans multiple critical areas in organizational psychology, with particular focus on leadership dynamics, power structures, decision-making processes, human resource management, competence management, and motivation. Her work demonstrates consistent evolution from foundational research on cognitive biases and managerial problem-finding in the 1990s to contemporary investigations of digital communication, dark personality traits in leadership, and workplace flexibility in the current decade.
Her recent publications (2023-2024) reveal a strong emphasis on practical applications of organizational psychology, with numerous commentaries in Dagens Næringsliv addressing timely workplace issues such as compressed workweeks, gender dynamics in leadership, the prevalence of 'dark' personality traits among leaders, and the psychological implications of digital communication. Her academic articles continue to make significant contributions to understanding power dynamics, with her 2023 replication study on smileys in professional communication and research on social versus personal power effects on social perception.
Professor Lai has established herself as both a rigorous academic researcher and an influential public intellectual, bridging the gap between scholarly work and practical organizational challenges through her prolific output of academic papers, books, and popular commentaries that address contemporary workplace issues with psychological insight.
