Aylan Couchie (she/her) is an Anishinaabe interdisciplinary artist, curator, and writer from Nipissing First Nation, currently serving as Assistant Professor of Indigenous Digital Arts, Culture and Media (tenure-track) at the University of Toronto. She is cross-appointed to the Graduate Department at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design. Couchie is a PhD Candidate in Cultural Studies at Queen’s University (expected 2025) with an M.F.A. from OCAD University and a B.F.A. from NSCAD University.
- Education: Ph.D. (In Progress) at Queen’s University, M.F.A. (2018) at OCADU, B.F.A. (2016) at NSCADU, Fine Arts Advanced Diploma (2015) and Art & Design Fundamentals Certificate (2012) at Georgian College.
Her research explores Indigenous placemaking through digital media, gaming, AR/VR/XR, and public art. She focuses on intersections of colonial/Indigenous histories, language revitalization, and critiques of cultural appropriation. Her practice combines land-based methodologies, Indigenous storytelling, and digital interventions.
Couchie has received prestigious awards including the SSHRC Talent Award nominee (2023), Bombardier Graduate Scholarship (2020), and Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award (2015). She has curated exhibitions like mmaandaawaabi (2023) and created solo exhibitions including Survival of the Fittest (2024).
