Dr. Axel Thielmann is Head of the Department of Emerging Technologies at Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI. His career includes roles as Research Assistant (2001–2006), Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2005–2006), and Patent Engineer (2006–2007). Since 2007, he has led strategic innovation analyses at Fraunhofer ISI, coordinating nanotechnology and battery research initiatives. He holds a Doctoral degree in Physics from the University of Karlsruhe (2005).
His work focuses on innovation systems for Key Enabling Technologies (KETs), including nanotechnology, advanced materials, and energy storage. He advises EU and German federal policies, leading the EU ETIP Battery Sector’s Education & Skills Task Force and representing Fraunhofer in alliances like the Battery Alliance. He has coordinated major projects such as the LIB2015 roadmap and TRaWeBa battery value chain analysis.
Thielmann’s research spans battery technology, electromobility, and sustainability, with emphasis on policy frameworks, market dynamics, and workforce development. He has authored over 50 publications, including roadmaps for battery production equipment and solid-state batteries, emphasizing actionable insights for industry and policymakers.
