PD Dr. Axel Schwope serves as head of the X-ray astronomy group at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) and holds the position of Privatdozent (Associate Professor) at the University of Potsdam. He actively supervises Bachelor's, Master's, and doctoral students in astrophysics research, welcoming new students to his research group.
Dr. Schwope's research focuses on compact binaries (particularly those with white dwarfs), neutron stars, and large-scale surveys at X-ray and optical wavelengths. He serves as co-investigator of eROSITA and the XMM-Newton Survey Science Centre, and leads activities to identify Compact Binaries in SDSS-V. His work spans multiple areas of high-energy astrophysics, including active galactic nuclei (AGN), clusters of galaxies, light pollution (sky protection), and Doppler tomography.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on X-ray astronomy, particularly using data from the eROSITA mission, SDSS surveys, and other major astronomical facilities. His research frequently employs multi-wavelength approaches, combining X-ray, optical, and other observations to study compact objects and their environments. A significant portion of his recent work focuses on white dwarfs, cataclysmic variables, and binary star systems.
