Axel Kae hne is a Professor of Health Service Research at Edge Hill University Medical School and Director of the Evaluation & Policy Analysis Unit. He holds appointments as Visiting Professor at the University of Eastern Finland (2019-2026) and Honorary Reader at the University of Manchester (2020-2021). His roles include Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Integrated Care and Journal of Health Organization and Management. He has served as President (2020-2022) and Vice President (2022-2024) of the European Health Management Association.
Education: Studied at Free University Berlin, Humboldt University, Aberdeen University, and University of Wales. Current residences in Liverpool and South Wales.
Research focuses on integrated care systems, evaluation methodologies, and health services for vulnerable populations. Key interests include complex adaptive systems in healthcare, youth health transition, and multiagency collaboration. His work addresses challenges in service integration for patients with complex needs, leveraging both quantitative and qualitative approaches.
Teaching: Leads modules in Strategic Clinical Leadership and Research Methodologies for postgraduate programs, supervising 3 PhD and multiple Master’s students annually. Coordinates dissertation supervision for over 65 students in Medicine/Surgery programs.
Grants/Projects: Active in over 14 funded projects including evaluations of palliative care programs, social prescribing initiatives, and NHS transformation projects. Recent grants include the Health Foundation synthesis study (2023) and the Children and Young People's Social Prescribing project (2022-2025).
Labs/Teams: Directs the Evaluation & Policy Analysis Unit, collaborating with NHS England Leadership Observatory and Wrightingon NHS Trust. Oversees multidisciplinary teams focused on health system innovation and policy analysis.
