Dr. Avril Collinson is an Associate Professor in Dietetics at the School of Health Professions, University of Plymouth. She serves as Academic Lead and Programme Lead for the MDiet (Hons) Dietetics program, focusing on delivering high-quality academic and scholarly activity. Her teaching includes leading Year 3 dietetic theory modules and specialized MDiet modules on Malnutrition and Nutritional Support, and Contemporary Issues in Clinical Nutrition. She actively supervises undergraduate, masters, and PhD students.
Research Interests: Her work centers on clinical nutrition interventions, public health nutrition for vulnerable populations (e.g., elderly adults and children with epilepsy), and optimizing dietetic care in healthcare settings. Recent projects include developing quality-of-life measures for ketogenic diet therapy in childhood epilepsy and identifying effective dietetic practices using electronic health records.
Advising & Grants: Supervised PhD research includes studies on frailty prevention in the elderly, ketogenic diet outcomes, and ocular accommodation in Type 2 Diabetes. She has also advised on nutrition education for Saudi adolescent girls and non-transferrin-bound iron in diabetes.
Affiliations: Based at InterCity Place, Plymouth Railway Station, she contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related to health and well-being through her research and teaching.
