Averell Schmidt is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, specializing in international cooperation, global governance, and human rights. He will join the University of Southern California’s Department of Political Science and International Relations as an Assistant Professor in 2026. Previously, he held fellowships at Harvard University’s Carr Center, Belfer Center, and Notre Dame’s International Security Center, alongside roles in policy research and the Peace Corps.
His research combines quantitative methods with historical analysis to examine treaty withdrawal impacts, institutional effectiveness, and the consequences of US foreign policy actions. Key projects include studying how treaty exits shape international relations and the effects of torture policies on global norms. He received his Ph.D. in Public Policy from Harvard (2024) and an MPP from the Harvard Kennedy School (2023).
His work has been recognized with the APSA Best Article Award (2023) and ISA’s Lawrence S. Finkelstein Prize (2024). He teaches courses on global governance, security strategy, and quantitative methods, emphasizing policy applications and causal inference.
