Reid Pauly is an Assistant Professor of Political Science and the Dean’s Assistant Professor of Nuclear Security and Policy at Brown University's Watson School of International and Public Affairs. His research bridges nuclear strategy, coercion, and wargaming in international security contexts.
- Education:
- Ph.D. in Security Studies, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
Pauly’s scholarship focuses on coercive diplomacy and nuclear proliferation, particularly the assurance dilemma—how targets of coercion fear post-compliance punishment. His work also explores strategic secrecy, tacit cooperation between adversaries, and the psychological dimensions of nuclear brinkmanship.
His recent publications highlight 20th-century nuclear restraint, wargaming as a research method, and deniability in nonproliferation regimes. These studies often incorporate historical analysis, archival research, and experimental simulations to dissect crisis decision-making and policy misjudgments.
