Aurel Schubert

Aurel Schubert is an Honorary Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Vienna’s Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Wien). He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of South Carolina and has held prominent roles in central banking and statistics across Europe, including Director General for Statistics at the European Central Bank (2010–2018) and Director of Statistics at the Oesterreichischen Nationalbank (OeNB, 1997–2010). He is a globally recognized expert in central banking, monetary history, and statistical frameworks.

Research Interests: Schubert’s work focuses on the intersection of central banking, monetary policy, and statistical methodologies. He has authored The Credit-Anstalt Crisis of 1931 (Cambridge University Press) and over 50 articles on topics such as European monetary history, financial stability, and macroeconomic statistics. His research emphasizes institutional frameworks for economic data collection and policy implementation.
