Astrid M. Eckert is a Professor at Emory University, specializing in modern German and European history with a focus on environmental history and borderlands. Her research explores the cultural, social, and political dimensions of postwar Europe, including the Nazi era and inter-German relations. She holds M.A. degrees from the Free University of Berlin and the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. from the Free University of Berlin.
Her major publications include Struggle for the Files (2012), which examines the return of German archives post-WWII, and West Germany and the Iron Curtain (2019), analyzing the impact of the inter-German border on West Germany. Both books have garnered prestigious awards, including the Waldo Gifford Leland Award and the DAAD/GSA Book Prize.
