Ashley Tate is an Assistant Professor of Dance at the College of Arts + Architecture at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. A lifelong dancer, she combines pedagogy, leadership, and creative exploration, having founded the Ashleyliane Dance Company (ADC) in 2007 and served as chair of the dance department at Grand Center Arts Academy (2015–2018).
Education:
- Bachelor’s in Computer Science, Texas Christian University
- MFA in Dance, Washington University in St. Louis (2018)
Research and Practice: Tate’s work spans jazz, hip-hop, and socially engaged dance, emphasizing movement as a vehicle for cultural and historical dialogue. Her choreography integrates history with contemporary expression, aiming to make dance accessible and transformative. ADC’s mission has evolved to focus on community-driven storytelling, reflecting her belief in dance as a tool for connection and change.
Community Initiatives: Tate co-produced Dance the Vote, a nonpartisan voter registration project, and participated in the 2023 No Tears Project, a multidisciplinary festival honoring Civil Rights history. These efforts highlight her commitment to using art for social impact.
Teaching Philosophy: She guides students to overcome movement anxieties, fostering bravery and self-expression through dance. Her approach merges technical rigor with historical context, aiming to ignite passion and intellectual curiosity.
