Ashleigh Keall is an Assistant Professor in Law at the University of Sussex’s School of Law, Politics and Sociology. Her research focuses on constitutional protection for religious freedom, intersecting with feminist legal theory, harm theories, secularism, equality, and social justice. Teaching includes Public Law, Land Law, Canadian Constitutional Law, and Aboriginal Law.
Education: PhD (UCL, 2020), LLB (University of British Columbia, 2008, Gold Medalist), BA (University of Ottawa, 2002, Gold Medalist). Certified as a Barrister and Solicitor in Ontario (non-practicing). Fluent in French.
Research explores how legal frameworks address intersections between religious freedom and societal harm, with emphasis on Canadian constitutional contexts. Recent work includes analyses of veiling rights, state authority dynamics, and historical legal cases like Christie v York Corporation. Publications span constitutional adjudication and feminist legal critiques.
Awards include Modern Law Review Early Career Fellowship and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship. Active in academic governance: co-founded UCL Laws Feminist Book Club and contributed to Athena SWAN Bronze award application. Prior roles include Supreme Court of Canada Judicial Clerk, Law Commission of England & Wales, and Battersea Law Centre volunteer.
Teaching spans Canadian legal traditions and property law. Supervises PhD students in law and religion, constitutional law, and harm theory. Engages in public-sector roles beyond academia, including refugee outreach and primary school teaching.
