Asha Kaushal is an Associate Professor and Associate Dean, Research and International at the Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia, since 2016. She holds advanced degrees including a PhD from UBC and has held roles such as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law. Her research focuses on immigration law, citizenship, public law, legal theory, and transnational law, emphasizing how law interacts with diversity and difference. She is affiliated with UBC Migration, a research excellence cluster.
Her academic work spans constitutional law, federalism, and TWAIL approaches. Notable publications include analyses of deportation’s coercive power, pandemic-era immigration policies, and comparative studies on constitutional frameworks. She has received the Baxter Family Competition on Federalism award for her work on jurisdictional accommodations.
Professionally, she has served as a law clerk at the Ontario Court of Appeal and worked in civil litigation and international investment law. Her teaching includes courses on Immigration Law, Racism and Law, and Transnational Law. Supervised graduate students explore topics aligned with her research in migration, constitutional theory, and legal pluralism.
Award highlights include the Baxter Family Competition prize and her work cited by the Supreme Court of Canada in Ezokola v. Canada.
