Efrat Arbel is an Associate Professor at the University of British Columbia's Allard School of Law. She holds a B.A. from McGill University, a J.D. from UBC, and an LL.M. and S.J.D. from Harvard Law School. Her research focuses on legal rights in liminal spaces such as borders, detention centers, and prisons. She has held visiting positions at the Oxford Center for Criminology and the European University Institute, and is currently a SSHRC-funded principal investigator studying immigration detention in Canada. Arbel has been awarded the 2022 Killam Accelerator Research Fellowship and served as a Canada Research Fellow at Harvard's Weatherhead Centre.
Her professional roles include advising the Multi-Agency Partnership BC Immigration Holding Center Support Program, training the Immigration and Refugee Board’s Gender Taskforce, and pro bono litigation. She has engaged with government agencies like CBSA and ICE, and appeared as counsel before Canada’s Supreme Court. Arbel is also a media commentator featured in The New York Times and The Globe and Mail, and contributes to the Centre for Migration Studies and Oxford’s Border Criminologies.
