Professor Ari Finkelstein is a historian specializing in Jews and Judaism in the Greco-Roman world at the University of Cincinnati, College of Arts and Sciences. His research explores the intersection of Jewish identity, paganism, and Christianity in Late Antiquity, particularly through the lens of Emperor Julian’s strategies to delegitimize Christianity by engaging with Jewish communities.
- PhD and law degrees from McGill University
His academic interests span Greco-Roman law, early Christian studies, biblical reception, post-colonial studies, and semiotics. His current book project, provisionally titled "Emperor Julian and the Jews: the Use of Jews in the Making of a Pagan Empire", builds on his doctoral work.
He has secured multiple research grants, including awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the University of Cincinnati’s University Research Council, for projects like "Pursuing Justice: Jewish Law in the 21st Century" and "Foodaism: Do Jews Make Food or Does Food Make Jews?"
