David Levenson is an Associate Professor of Religion at Florida State University's Department of Religion, housed within the College of Arts and Sciences. He holds the additional title of Distinguished Teaching Professor. His expertise spans early Christian studies, ancient Judaism, and the textual traditions of Josephus. He teaches languages including Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Syriac, and Aramaic, alongside advanced courses in these fields.
Education:
- Ph.D. in New Testament and Christian Origins (1980), Harvard University
Research Focus: Dr. Levenson's work centers on Jewish-Christian relations in antiquity, particularly the portrayal of Jews and Judaism in early Christian narratives, and critical analysis of Josephus' texts. He is co-authoring a commentary on Josephus' Jewish War Book Six with Thomas Martin, while also collaborating on critical editions of Josephus' Latin translations and the Sefer Yosippon. His research also examines Emperor Julian and the use of Josephus in late antique historiography.
Current Projects: Ongoing collaborations include the Josephus textual projects and exploration of the Emperor Julian's legacy. He actively contributes to interdisciplinary discussions in religious studies through these initiatives.
