Arun Sreekumar is a Professor at Baylor College of Medicine, holding dual roles as Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology and Director of the Metabolomics Shared Resource at the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center. He earned a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the Indian Institute of Science (2000), an M.S. from the University of Pune (1994), and a BS from the University of Mysore (1992). His awards include the 2017 Prostate Cancer Foundation Challenge Award and the 2015 Molecular Cell Biology Departmental Faculty Award for Research Excellence.
His research focuses on cancer metabolism, drug resistance mechanisms, and signal transduction, particularly in prostate and bladder cancers. Notable work includes studies on the role of mitochondrial pyruvate transporters in prostate cancer progression and metabolomic profiling of racial disparities in cancer outcomes. He leads multiple NIH-funded grants and collaborates on projects such as defining metabolic biomarkers for cancer prognosis and developing therapies targeting metabolic vulnerabilities.
Dr. Sreekumar’s lab integrates metabolomics, genomics, and proteomics to uncover metabolic pathways driving cancer progression. His work bridges basic science and clinical applications, with a focus on improving therapies for African American populations disproportionately affected by certain cancers. He also serves on editorial boards such as PLOS One and contributes to study sections for cancer research organizations.
