Arshi Shaikh-Grande is an Associate Professor in Social Development Studies at the University of Waterloo. Her academic background includes a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Rural and Northern Health, an M.S.W., and an M.A. in Interdisciplinary Human Development from Laurentian University, as well as an M.A. in Educational Psychology and a B.A. in Psychology from Gujarat University, India.
Her research explores critical societal issues through interdisciplinary lenses, with primary interests in:
- Health and wellbeing, emphasizing body-mind-space-joy resonances
- Structural violence (colonization, patriarchy, neoliberalism)
- Resilience mechanisms in vulnerable populations
- Indigenous worldviews and environmental justice
- Homelessness and migration dynamics
Her publications predominantly focus on mental health, housing insecurity, and equity in Northern and Indigenous communities, utilizing mixed-method approaches to analyze systemic barriers and community resilience. Conference presentations further demonstrate her work on digital storytelling methodologies and social determinants of health.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on lifespan development, resilience, diversity, and international community organization:
