Joey-Lynn Wabie is an Algonquin Anicinabe ikwe (woman) from Mahingan Sagahigan (Wolf Lake) First Nation and Associate Professor in Laurentian University's School of Indigenous Relations. She serves as leader of the Maamwizing Indigenous Research Institute and Academic Director for YouthREX Indigenous Initiatives, conducting community-driven research across Anishinaabe territories.
Her educational foundation includes:
- PhD in Rural and Northern Health, Laurentian University (2017)
- MSW in Social Work, Laurentian University (2011)
- BSW in Indigenous Relations, Laurentian University (2005)
Dr. Wabie's scholarship centers on decolonizing frameworks through Indigenous youth perspectives on Truth & Reconciliation, spiritual wellness practices, and land-based pedagogy. Her work prioritizes cultural resurgence via storytelling, ceremony, and direct community action—rejecting extractive research models in favor of OCAP®-guided partnerships where communities control data and benefit sharing.
Her research demonstrates consistent external funding success through:
- SSHRC ($430,832) for Maamwizing community research hub
- CIHR collaborations on Indigenous health mentorship
- Canadian Heritage grants for cultural revitalization
- University of Toronto partnerships on child welfare reform
Major recognitions include three Laurentian University Research Week awards (2019-2020) for community-engaged projects. As Maamwizing Institute lead, she directs a network connecting 20+ Indigenous communities with academic resources while centering Anishinaabe knowledge systems in all initiatives.
