Aron Keith Barbey is the Mildred Francis Thompson University Professor and Director of the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior, and the Decision Neuroscience Laboratory at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from Emory University and a research fellowship in Cognitive Neuroscience from the NIH.
His research focuses on the neural mechanisms of human intelligence and decision-making, emphasizing interventions through cognitive neuroscience, physical fitness, and nutrition. Supported by agencies like the NIH, NSF, and DoD, his work explores brain network dynamics, neuroplasticity, and cognitive enhancement. Notable contributions include studies on traumatic brain injury, sport-related concussion biomarkers, and the role of nutrients in healthy aging.
Recent publications highlight advancements in connectome-based predictive modeling, nutrient biomarkers, and the Free Energy Principle. Barbey has co-edited major handbooks and serves on the United States Defense Science Study Group. His labs integrate AI and engineering methods to elucidate brain function, aiming to bridge neuroscience with precision health and AI innovation.
