Arne Hole is an Associate Professor at the Department of Teacher Education and School Research, Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Oslo. His email is arne.hole@ils.uio.no and he is located in room 512 at Niels Henrik Abel's house. He teaches MAT1100 at the Department of Mathematics (Faculty of Mathematical Sciences) and PPU3210 at ILS (Faculty of Physics) in the fall semester 2025.
Dr. Hole holds a Dr. Scient in mathematics from the University of Oslo (1996). His academic career includes positions as Associate Professor at Hedmark University College (teacher education, 1997-1998) and Associate Professor in mathematics at Oslo University College (department of teacher education, 1998-2011). He has been employed at the University of Oslo since 2011.
His research focuses on Mathematics, Mathematics Didactics, Large-scale Studies, Fundamental Problems, and Mathematics Development, with particular emphasis on TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study). His work often examines the relationship between mathematics and physics education, student performance factors, and curriculum development in Norwegian educational contexts. Dr. Hole's research frequently involves international comparative studies and analysis of assessment data.
His recent publications demonstrate strong engagement with TIMSS Advanced data, examining physics and mathematics performance across countries, the impact of home background and teaching factors, and the development of Norwegian curricula. His work spans both theoretical and practical aspects of mathematics and science education.
Dr. Hole is actively involved with the Large-scale Educational Assessment (LEA) research group at the University of Oslo, where he contributes to major international educational studies.
