Arne Brataas

Arne Brataas is a Professor at the Department of Physics, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), within the Faculty of Natural Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from NTNU (1997) and completed postdoctoral research at TU Delft (1997-1999) and Harvard University (1999-2002). He has been a faculty member at NTNU since 2002.

Research Interests: His work focuses on quantum transport, spin dynamics, and magnonics in materials including insulators, semiconductors, metals, and superconductors. Key areas include antiferromagnetic materials, spintronics, and the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity.

Key Roles: He served as founding director of the Center of Excellence QuSpin (2017–2023) and chaired the Kavli Prize Committee in Nanoscience (2013–2019). He is a recipient of the 2015 ERC Advanced Grant and has been an Associate Editor of Physical Review Letters (2007–2014).

Publications: His research spans theoretical and experimental studies on magnon condensation, spin-orbit torques, and superconductivity induced by magnetic proximity effects. Notable contributions include work on antiferromagnetic spintronics and quantum phenomena in low-dimensional systems.

Advising & Grants: Supervised Ph.D. students including Vemund Falch and Hans Gløckner Giil. His research has been supported by the Research Council of Norway and the European Research Council. He leads the QuSpin research group, exploring quantum spintronics and topological materials.

Labs/Teams: Director of the Center for Quantum Spintronics (QuSpin), a multidisciplinary team advancing quantum materials science and magnon-based technologies.
