She previously served as Interim Divisional Dean (2020–2023), Associate Dean for Administration and Faculty Affairs (2018–2023), and Chair of the Systems Engineering and Operations Research Department (2002–2017). She is affiliated with professional societies including INFORMS, INCOSE, IISE, SIAM, and IFEES.
Her research focuses on optimization, particularly nonlinear programming, optimization in medical applications, and systems thinking. She has also contributed to airport design and model-based systems engineering. Her work bridges theoretical optimization and real-world engineering systems.
Dr. Sofer has received significant recognition, including being elected Fellow of INFORMS (2016), IISE (2018), and INCOSE (2022). She has held leadership roles such as Vice President for Meetings of INFORMS, Academic Director of INCOSE, Secretary of IISE, and Chair of ACORD. She has served on editorial boards of Operations Research, Management Science, and the MOS-SIAM Book Series.
She co-authored the textbook Linear and Nonlinear Optimization (SIAM, 2008), and edited volumes on operations research in medicine. Her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation and Pohang University of Science and Technology. She was co-chair of major conferences including the SIAM Conference on Optimization (2002) and the International Conference on Model-Based Systems Engineering (2010). She has also been affiliated with the Simulation Group at Georgetown University Medical Center.
