Aref Shams is a Research Fellow at the Faculty of Laws, University College London (UCL), where he joined in September 2022. His research is funded by the UCL Faculty Research Scholarship and focuses on cooperation mechanisms in international law, particularly in environmental and climate governance contexts. He holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) with First Class Honours from the University of Waikato (New Zealand) and a Master in International Law from the Geneva Graduate Institute, supported by the Credit Suisse Scholarship.
His research interests include public international law, theory of international law, and international environmental law. His recent work examines the role of international courts in climate litigation (e.g., legitimacy constraints) and gaps in maritime environmental governance under the Law of the Sea.
Key publications include contributions to the Review of European, Comparative & International Environmental Law and a chapter in The Environmental Rule of Law for Oceans (Cambridge University Press, 2023). His scholarship highlights interdisciplinary approaches to legal frameworks addressing global environmental challenges.
