Professor Alexander Gillespie is a distinguished academic at Te Piringa Faculty of Law, University of Waikato, New Zealand. He holds a PhD from the University of Nottingham, with post-doctoral studies at Columbia University, and previously earned his LLB and LLM with Honors from the University of Auckland. His extensive career spans international environmental law, laws of war, civil liberties, and New Zealand's legal system.
Professor Gillespie's research interests focus on international environmental law, international humanitarian law, and New Zealand's legal framework. His scholarship examines climate change impacts, heritage protection, armed conflict regulations, and comparative legal systems. He has published 19 books and over 40 academic articles, with recent works addressing contemporary issues like firearms legislation, Ukraine conflict implications, and New Zealand's position in global geopolitics.
His publications demonstrate a consistent pattern of addressing pressing global challenges through legal frameworks. Recent articles focus on international security concerns, environmental governance, constitutional matters related to the Treaty of Waitangi, and humanitarian law applications in contemporary conflicts. His scholarship bridges historical analysis with current policy challenges.
