Antonio Cassese (1937-2011) was an influential Professor of International Law at the European University Institute and University of Florence. He made foundational contributions to international criminal law and human rights, helping establish international tribunals including the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia which he served as first president.
His scholarship focused on human dimensions of international law, particularly humanitarian law and human rights protections. Cassese played key roles in developing international legal frameworks against torture and for prevention of inhuman treatment.
