Antoine van Oijen is a Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Chemistry at the University of Wollongong (UOW), affiliated with the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health and the School of Chemistry and Molecular Bioscience. He holds an Honorary Fellowship (2023–present) and previously served as Professor (2020–2023). His research focuses on single-molecule visualization techniques, molecular biophysics, and applications in health and technology. He leads the Molecular Horizons initiative and is an NHMRC Leadership Fellow.
Education: BSc and PhD in Physics (Netherlands), postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School, and professorship at Groningen University before joining UOW in 2014. Awards include the ARC Laureate Fellowship and Armenise-Harvard Junior Faculty Award.
Research interests span structural biology, enzymology, and medical biotechnology. Key projects include studying molecular chaperones, protein aggregation, and developing single-molecule imaging tools. He has secured major grants from ARC, including the Centre of Excellence in Quantum Biotechnology and infrastructure funding for single-molecule facilities.
Current supervision includes PhD projects on chaperone mechanisms, DNA replication roadblocks, and alpha-synuclein interactions. His lab collaborates internationally and publishes in top journals like Nucleic Acids Research and The Biochemical Journal.
