Antiño R. Allen

Antiño R. Allen is a Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Pharmacy. He serves as the Associate Dean of Pipeline and Career Development for the Graduate School and is a member of the Division of Radiation Health. His work bridges radiation biology and neuroscience, focusing on the impact of radiation and trauma on cognitive function.

Dr. Allen's research program investigates the mechanisms by which inflammation and oxidative stress alter neuronal structure and cognitive performance after exposure to ionizing radiation (including space-relevant heavy ions and galactic cosmic rays) or traumatic brain injury. His recent work also explores:

• Cardiac and bone effects of multi-ion space radiation
• Mitochondrial dysfunction in radiation-induced cognitive deficits
• Neuroprotective strategies against chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment

Analysis of his 2021-2023 publications shows a cohesive research trajectory in space radiation biology, utilizing murine models to assess multi-organ impacts (brain, heart, bone) and identify molecular targets for countermeasures. His work increasingly integrates mitochondrial metabolism and oxidative stress pathways.

Dr. Allen leads an active research laboratory that has mentored summer students and produced alumni researchers. He contributes to graduate education through the UAMS Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) and teaches courses in drug action and molecular biotechnology.
