Anthony Thaventhiran

Anthony Thaventhiran is a Clinical Research Fellow and General Surgery registrar at Queen Mary University of London's School of Medicine and Dentistry. He joined the Centre in April 2018 to undertake a PhD with the ambition of becoming an academic trauma surgeon. His work focuses on discovering novel therapeutics to treat Acute Traumatic Coagulopathy (ATC).

Dr. Thaventhiran studied medicine at Barts and the London, where he also completed an intercalated BSc in clinical materials focusing on nanocapsules as a drug delivery vector. He developed his interest in trauma care during medical school and spent his elective comparing outcomes between the Royal London Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.

His primary research interests center around trauma surgery and Acute Traumatic Coagulopathy, with a specific focus on developing novel therapeutics that target the underlying pathology to improve outcomes from trauma hemorrhage. He also has significant expertise in medical education, holding an MSc from the Royal College of Physicians of London in Medical Education.

Dr. Thaventhiran's publication record demonstrates expertise across multiple surgical specialties including trauma surgery, pediatric surgery, diagnostic imaging, and surgical education. His most recent work focuses on trauma hemorrhage management, surgical training standards, and therapeutic innovations in trauma care.

His notable recognitions include:

Dr. Thaventhiran holds leadership positions in surgical education as Director for Education for the Association of Surgeons in Training, where he helped establish the Major Trauma Training Interface Group Fellowships. He also serves as the trainee representative for the Intercollegiate Committee for Basic Surgical Examinations and the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges Genomics committee.
