Chris Bretherton

Chris Bretherton is an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer and Specialty Registrar in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at Queen Mary University of London, based at the Blizard Institute's Centre for Bone and Joint Health and the Royal London Hospital Rotation. His dual role integrates clinical practice with academic research to advance orthopaedic trauma care through evidence-based methodologies.

Dr. Bretherton specializes in clinical and cost-effectiveness research within orthopaedic trauma, with particular emphasis on complex fractures and major trauma management. His work leverages systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, and mixed-methods approaches to address critical gaps in trauma care. As a former Academic Representative for the British Orthopaedic Trainees Association (BOTA), he has pioneered surgeon-led priority setting partnerships and facilitated multi-center clinical trials in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons. His current initiatives focus on building international research networks to evaluate both established and innovative orthopaedic treatments for global applicability.

Based at the Centre for Bone and Joint Health, Dr. Bretherton actively develops collaborative frameworks with national surgical bodies to translate research findings into clinical practice, emphasizing practical implementation of evidence-based protocols across trauma systems.
