Anthony T. Kronman is the Sterling Professor of Law at Yale Law School, a position he has held since 2004. He previously served as Dean of Yale Law School from 1994 to 2004 and joined the Yale faculty in 1978 after teaching at the University of Chicago and Minnesota Law Schools. He holds a J.D. from Yale Law School (1975), a Ph.D. in Philosophy from Yale (1972), and a B.A. in Political Science from Williams College (1968).
His research interests span legal philosophy, constitutional law, and the ethical dimensions of the legal profession. He critiques modern educational trends in books like Education’s End (2007) and After Disbelief (2022), which explore the role of meaning in life and spirituality. His work also examines the decline of the 'lawyer-statesman' ideal and the impact of diversity initiatives on free speech in academia.
Key articles address topics like democratic values, legal rhetoric, and professional ethics. His writings frequently bridge law, philosophy, and societal structures. Awards include the French National Order of Merit (2004) and the Kellogg Award (2018) for career achievement. He has served on boards of Yale University Press, the Foote School, and Adelphia Communications Corporation, reflecting his broader institutional leadership roles.
Professor Kronman’s teaching spans constitutional law, jurisprudence, and contracts. He has advised on legal ethics reform and contributed to Yale College’s Directed Studies humanities program, emphasizing classical texts. His professional service includes roles as a senior editor of the Yale Law Journal and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
