Peggy Cooper Davis is the John S. R. Shad Professor of Lawyering and Ethics and Director of the Experiential Learning Lab at the New York University School of Law. She joined NYU Law in 1983 after serving as a Family Court judge and practicing law. Her research focuses on constitutional theory, family law, and legal pedagogy, with notable contributions to antislavery constitutionalism and education policy. Davis’s work bridges legal scholarship with social sciences, influencing legal training and child welfare policies.
Her education includes a JD from Harvard Law School (1968) and a BA in Philosophy from Western College for Women (1964), with Barnard College affiliation. She teaches courses like Lawyering Pedagogy and Academic Achievement Gaps: Law and Science Seminar, emphasizing experiential learning strategies.
Her scholarship includes over 50 articles and two books, such as Neglected Stories: The Constitution and Family Values (1997), which redefined antislavery legal traditions. She actively shapes legal education through the Experiential Learning Lab, developing mentorship and skill-building frameworks.
