Anthony Skelton is a Full Professor and Faculty Scholar (2023-25) in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Western Ontario, affiliated with the Rotman Institute of Philosophy. He holds editorial roles at the Journal for the History of Analytical Philosophy and Utilitas. His research focuses on normative ethics, the history of ethics (especially Henry Sidgwick), and bioethics. Key publications include Sidgwick’s Ethics (2025) and co-edited volumes like Bioethics in Canada. He has received awards such as the Arts and Humanities Teaching Excellence Award (2015) and the Graham and Gail Wright Distinguished Scholar (2019-20). His work spans academic articles, encyclopedia entries, and popular media, addressing topics like vaccine mandates, adolescent autonomy, and pandemic ethics.
Education: PhD in Philosophy from the University of Toronto (thesis: Reasoning towards Utilitarianism: Learning from Sidgwick), supervised by Wayne Sumner and Thomas Hurka. Postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan (2004-05), supervised by Steve Darwall. Visiting roles include the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics (2012-13) and Fondation Brocher (2015).
Research interests include Sidgwick’s moral epistemology, utilitarianism’s development, and ethical dilemmas in healthcare and public policy. Collaborations with Lisa Forsberg, Isra Black, and others dominate recent work. His articles explore topics like children’s well-being, vaccine ethics, and the intersection of ethics with legal and medical practices. Awards include repeated University Students’ Council Teaching Honour Roll Certificates (2008, 2011–2017).
