Bart Schultz is a Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the University of Chicago, teaching since 1987. He directs the Civic Knowledge Project (CKP), focusing on public ethics and community engagement. His research spans political philosophy, ethics, and the history of utilitarianism, with notable works like Henry Sidgwick: Eye of the Universe and The Happiness Philosophers. Schultz is also Editor of Utilitas, the leading journal on utilitarian studies.
He leads the CKP’s MLK Initiative, honoring Dr. King’s legacy through community programs, and collaborates with civil rights activist Timuel Black. His teaching emphasizes interdisciplinary topics like philosophy and philanthropy, environmental racism, and the philosophy of education, often incorporating guest speakers and fieldwork. Schultz has received awards for teaching excellence and civic engagement, including the Jacques Barzun Prize and the PDC Prize.
His academic interests bridge theory and practice, addressing issues like environmental justice, civic responsibility, and educational equity. Recent courses include Ecocentrism and Environmental Racism and Philosophy and Philanthropy, reflecting his commitment to applied ethics.
